I followed Karl Fogel's suggestion of searching the dev mailing
list archives for "SQL" and the most recent active discussion I
could find in subversion.tigris.org was in Oct. 2003, where Glenn
A. Thompson (gat) mentioned he was "quite confident we will get
there", i.e., "getting SVN to use an SQL database for its data
store", but he didn't have much time even to discuss it on the
list. I also found some of gat's design documents (the first two
dates are from Apache headers):

Subversion pluggable-db:
http://www.cdrguys.com/subversion/fs_refactoring/index.html
(14-Mar-2003)
SQL fs docs Introduction:
http://www.cdrguys.com/subversion/sql_fs_docs/svn_fs_sql.htm
(21-Nov-2002)
Pluggable-fs Design:
http://www.cdrguys.com/subversion/htmlPluggable/Pluggable3.htm
(nominally July 2003, Apache: 2-Apr-2004)

I haven't looked at the documents in detail though. I think they
require reading SVN design documents first or concurrently and
extrapolating, since the gat documents seem to precede the
implementation of FSFS.

Searching in svn.haxx.se/dev I found more recent emails but,
unless I missed something, I think the status can be summarized
by the following two exchanges:

15-Jul-2004 >> Ben Collins-Sussman: It's not happening at all.
Gat has stopped working on it for now, and I don't think it's on
anyone's else's radar at the moment.
Glenn A. Thompson: This is true. But I still hope to do it.

11-Aug-2004 >> Brian W. Fitzpatrick: Lack of developers who are
interested enough to get started on designing and writing it.
There seems to be plenty of interest in having the feature,
however. :-)
Max Bowsher: SQL support will happen if/when someone decides to
devote a significant chunk of their time to developing it.

My professional alter ego is interested in this subject (but not
enough to make that commitment).

Joe
