How does my updating the *repository* make my WC out-of-date? If 'svn
status' shows no differences, and 'svn update' will make no changes, why
isn't it up to date?

Yes, those are all rhetorical questions: I understand the issue with
mixed WCs. But it can be hard for us CVS refugees to get used to.
