Just to put out an update, I ended up using:

./configure --with-ssl \
        --enable-all-static --without-berkeley-db \
        --without-apache --without-apxs --disable-mod-activation \
        --disable-shared

I just wanted the client, so I explicitly got rid of the httpd modules
and the BDB stuff.
