At work, all our home directories are automounted from one of our
Netapps. Nearly everyone's working copies are in these NFS home
directories. We have never had this problem, and we've been
using svn here since about 0.36. We have clients running on
FreeBSD and Red Hat 8, 9, and Enterprise 3. Some of the RH
systems run Linux 2.6, most run 2.4.

Sorry i can't tell you what the problem is, but at least i can
tell you what it isn't :).
