If you look in contrib/tools/client-side there is a script called asvn.
It allows the storing of uid, gid, permissions plus it also allows the
storage of unsupported file types like devices and symlinks. I know
symlinks were added to the 1.1.x release but for those still using the
1.0.x it is useful. I wrote asvn to allow the backing up of a complete
filesystem.

I've been wanting to upgrade asvn for some time now but haven't had a
chance. Hopefully in the new year I can work on it again and do some
cleanup to make it a little more functional.
