By that definition, CVS doesn't have tags. As far as I know, most VC
systems allow tags to be modified, with appropriate privileges and/or
invocation options.

None the less, I'll throw in a vote for some sort of "revision alias",
mapping r1234 -> some_name. Yes, it can't represent mix versions, but
for %95-100% of what I use tags for, it would be sufficient, and somehow
seems more convenient that having separate directories. Not that I'd
want to give up copies, though, as they are certainly a useful tool,
too.
