svn webdav timeout issue

We are in the process of setting up a svn repository accessiable via
apache2. Most svn commands seem to work fine via the https://... method.
But whenever we tried to "svn list", it timed out after a few minutes
on requests similar to the one shown below:

PROPFIND /svn/vusmtest/!svn/bc/1/portal

After the timeout on the client side, apache2 continues to process the
above request...

Other subcommands such as add, update, commit, etc. all work fine. The
"log" subcommand can also be very slow.

Has anyone had similar problems before? Resolution?
