do I have to rm /usr/local/lib/libsnv* before building upgrade?

The INSTALL file instructs one to remove the installed libraries prior
to building a new version of Subversion. Are there any work arounds
for this?

I'm interested in minimizing downtime on our server while upgrading to
1.1. Given that I want to build from source and that I have to build
on the server, does anyone have any suggestions?

Is there a way to install another version of svn along side an
existing one? Then I could get everything installed (and tested) and
then switch over with one restart of apache (and have the old version
to go back to if need be).

Thanks,

+ seth

PS: platform is Linux. Repository is only accessed via Apache.
