        This is where "I intended this" and "Subversion does it this way"
are in conflict. If branches are analogous to parallel histories of a
file(or repository), user intended to checkpoint in one of the existing
history (of the trunk). But Subversion says, create a new history, where the
time
machine is frozen (outside core subversion using hooks), and this is
same as an existing history at point N.

Branches are creation of parallel histories. Tags are named points in an
existing
history.
  That they are implemented exactly in the same way is a repository
property,
which need not be the client interface.
