merge tracking

Hi! I'm new to the list, so sorry if this is a FAQ.

The website lists "merge tracking" as a medium-term goal for the project. Has there been any talk of when work on "medium-term" goals will begin? I work frequently with branches and tracking merges manually with logs is error-prone and cumbersome.
