svn:can't recode string

Hi list, my first post here.
I am testing svn on Mac OS X 10.3.5 and while trying to import a file
with a japanese name I get the error

svn: Can't recode string

what am I supposed to do in this case ?
from what I understand it's got something to do with the utf encoding
svn does.
