The filename or extension is too long.

All,

I have successfully imported a source tree from VSS into subversion and
tagged the import. Now I'm getting the following error while doing a
checkout:
    svn: Can't create directory
'tags/Passkey-7.40/7.40-01-091004/Rel/JBOSS-3.2.1 (B

ASE-BUILD)/passkey/deploy/jms/jbossmq-httpil.sar/jbossmq-httpil.war/WEB-INF/
clas
    ses/org/jboss/mq/il/http/servlet/.svn/text-base': The filename or
extension is t
    oo long.

I also try to cd into the http directory and run checkout there but got the
same error:
svn: Can't create directory 'servlet/.svn/text-base': The filename or
extension
    is too long.

Both the client and the server are running on Windows (Client on XP, server
on 2K).
I find it hard to believe this would be a limitation of Windows since the
source tree comes from VSS in the first place and can be retrieved.

Is this a bug in subversion?
How can I work around this problem? Would installing the subversion server
on linux help?

TIA.
