Copies aren't the same, because after the copy, changes in one tree are
not reflected in the other.

A closer match is probably "externals", also discussed in the previously
referenced book. These have limitations too, but there are limitations
in VSS shares as well; whether one is preferable to the other depends on
your use.

The good news is that you'll no longer being dealing with VSS.
