Allowing a client to specify files with a openoffice mime-type should
be merged using a separate local application, sure. Not storing
specific files differently server-side.

And really, server implementation is not a 'feature'. The feature
would be being able to merge open-office format files, and from a user
perspective is best met by an open-office format 2 and 3-way file
merge tool.
