make check bombs for --without-berkeley-db

Hello
     although I did manage a work-around for configure to properly
detect the presence of a sleepycat db-4.2 installation, I thought
I try a build using --without-berkeley-db since fsfs may be the
way of the future.

It built OK, but 'make check' goes bad...
...
Running all tests in getopt_tests.py...success
Running all tests in basic_tests.py...FAILURE
Running all tests in commit_tests.py...FAILURE

is this to be expected?
