fsfs and backups

So what's the best way to backup fsfs type repositories? hot-backup?
Or is simply copying the files appropriately enough. What happens if I
backup the files somewhere else in the middle of a commit?

I didn't see these questions answered anywhere in the fsfs faq. If I
missed something, I apologize. Thanks for any help
