svn delete

I did a svn checkout from a repository to a directory and that worked
correctly. I did this as a test of some code I am writing in Python. I know
want to delete the directory from under svn control so I open a command
window and type 'svn delete mydirectory'. I get back a message saying that
the parent directory of the directory I want to delete is not a working
copy. I do not understand this. SVN let me create a directory under SVN
control but it is not letting me remove the directory from SVN control. Or
have I missed something here ?
