I think you're misunderstanding the meaning of what a "symlink" is.

On Windows the closest analogue would be a "shortcut". A symlink will not
be updated with the contents of a file or directory any more than a shortcut
would.

If you are looking for having a different part of the repository show up in
a directory (a "symlink to a directory" as you describe it here), I would
suggest that you look in the documentation for the svn:externals property,
it may do something similar to what you want.

Bonus question: what if linky points to a directory? Will it be
replaced with a real Windoze directory (complete with files and sub-
directories) upon commit?
