auto-props and dirs

Is there some particular reason why auto-props doesn't apply to
directories? I'd love to set the svn:ignore for my *.xcode bundles to
*.mode*\n*.pbxuser (assuming, of course, that it translated \n into
newline, and if it doesn't then I'd request that as well) automatically
but I can't.
