Me too, me too. I've usually got myself trained to do "Save As", go up
2 directories and strip off .tmp, but occasionally I forget. A thought
which occurred to me when going through this process yesterday was that
it would help if the .tmp file was read-only by the time the diff editor
got hold of it. That way at least I'd get reminded when it wouldn't
save.
