Using SVN incorrectly?

Hi All,

I am relatively new to SVN, I have been using it at home by myself for
several weeks and have been very pleased. My company has offices in
India as well as the US and over their they use Clear Case. It is way to
slow to use over the internet (We don't have multisite vob) so we
started use SVN locally here in the US and it works great.

The problem is that some users are versioning word documents and if they
don't commit their changes quickly enough to frequently modified
documents they get version conflicts if someone commits a change first.
I imagine if you could exclusively lock the file editing, it would solve
this problem. I have checked the FAQ and did see this is as a feature...

Are we using SVN incorrectly, does this feature exist?

Regards,

Jeremy
