large checkout/update/switch fails (svn: The REPORT request returned invalid XML in response)

I get the following error whenever I do relatively large checkout, update or switch operations:

svn: REPORT request failed on '/svn/project/!svn/vcc/default'
svn: The REPORT request returned invalid XML in the response: XML parse error at line 79942: no element found (/svn/project/!svn/vcc/default)

I searched the mailing list archives, and found a thread that suggested an issue with similar symptoms had been fixed in 1.0.1 but obviously this particular issue wasn't ;-)

I'm running:

- RedHat 9
- Apache 2.0.49
- BDB 4.2
- SVN 1.0.4

any ideas?
