problem solved |-)

Seems like either the NetBSD pksrc I built Apache/SVN from is a bit fishy,
or I installed the iconv lib after the build. Finally got around to doing a
manual build straight from the Apache/SVN tarballs (which was an interesting
experience), and now all the server-side clients are well-behaved.

Will have to investigate the dependencies of those pkgsrces and get in touch
with their maintainers.

Perhaps you should be setting the LANG variable or LC_ALL instead?
