Not necessarily...depends on how it's configured

Again, not necessarily. It could be a driver problem, for example. Some
filter driver could be interfering with BDB's ability to mmap the
databse files.

If you find a reliable way to reproduce this (other than "use /that/
disk on my machine") then by all means describe it on the dev@ list. A
significant difference between the offending disk and all other volumes
on your system would definitely help.
