I thought Gustavo Niemeyer of Conectiva had a doc about using Subversion on
large projects... Ah, yes, here it is, Ben Collins-Sussman reminded me where
it was:

   https://moin.conectiva.com.br/RepositorySystem

(You'll get hit with a cert on the way in, but no authentication is required
as far as I can tell.)

That page is very specific to the way their RepositorySystem does things,
but maybe it will contain some useful information for you.
