Timeout problems on large directory

The following issue has been partially covered before on the mailing list, but none of the proposed solutions have worked.

Running subversion 1.0, with a repository strings file size of over 1GB, issuing svn update on a directory which contains (mostly in subdirectories) thousands of files (about 700MB total) results in a "timed out waiting for server" message. The server is running on the same machine, the http-timeout in the servers files is set to 6000 seconds and http-compression is set to no, the version of Apache is 2.0.48, and the Location section of httpd.conf has a "BrowserMatch .* no-gzip" directive. The machine has a 2.4GHz processor and 1GB of RAM.

What else do I need to do to make Subversion workable? Is there any debugging approach, as it were, which might yield more useful information to help solve the problem?
