strange commit failed: Item is out of date

Dear all,

on one single box, i have removed a lot of directories, in fact a
linux tree. The steps I carried out:

   140 17:41 svn rm linux-2.4.17_mvl21_old
   141 17:41 rm linux-2.4.17_mvl21_old/stat.log
   142 17:41 svn rm linux-2.4.17_mvl21_old
   143 17:44 svn commit
   144 17:51 history

job 141 failed, because I forgot removing a temporary file.
so, I removed the stat.log and retried the removal.

Strange to me, however, is that the commit failed:

   ibm-np4gs3-ppc_405!143> svn commit
   Deleting ibm-np4gs3-ppc_405/linux-2.4.17_mvl21_old
   svn: Commit failed (details follow):
   svn:
   Item '/NP/hardhat/devkit/lsp/ibm-np4gs3-ppc_405/linux-2.4.17_mvl21_old' is out of date

   svn: Your commit message was left in a temporary file:
   svn: '/home/ruf/PromethOS/+SVN/NP/hardhat/devkit/lsp/svn-commit.2.tmp'

so, I thought, svn update would to the job.

    ibm-np4gs3-ppc_405!146> svn update
    svn: REPORT request failed on '/svn/PromethOS/!svn/vcc/default'
    svn: REPORT of '/svn/PromethOS/!svn/vcc/default': timed out waiting for server (https://)

so, I retried, but:

    ibm-np4gs3-ppc_405!147> svn commit
    Deleting ibm-np4gs3-ppc_405/linux-2.4.17_mvl21_old
    svn: Commit failed (details follow):
    svn:
    Item '/NP/hardhat/devkit/lsp/ibm-np4gs3-ppc_405/linux-2.4.17_mvl21_old' is out of date

    svn: Your commit message was left in a temporary file:
    svn: '/home/ruf/PromethOS/+SVN/NP/hardhat/devkit/lsp/svn-commit.3.tmp'

Now, I am somehow lost. What can I do???
