symbolic names?

Several of my users have noted that, although it is perfectly possible
to go through and find the base revision of a particular branch and
then manually enter it in when doing a merge, it is not necessarily
pleasant to do so.

I realize the dogma in subversion is largely against applying symbolic
names to revisions, but it would be really nice at times if one could
specify svn merge -rbranchbase:HEAD instead of -r2858:HEAD or what
have you.

I'd imagine "symbolic names" as just being identifiers one could
arbitrarily set on particular revisions to make life easier when
typing in commands. Would it be extremely difficult to add such a
feature? Would it violate the subversion ethos too much?
