another annoying error message

Another of my users complained about the following error message:

$ svn diff . svn+ssh://RESTOFURL
svn: A path under version control is needed for this operation

It appears that what is happening is that svn diff will not take mixed
working copy paths and URLs and is erroring out. However, the error
message is very very cryptic.
