You are correct. I misread the documentation; I thought the
'--with-libs=/...' instead said '--with-ssl=...'. Also, the neon
configure script seems to support '--with-ssl=...' just fine, so I assumed
that it would work at the top level. I have OpenSSL installed at
/usr/local, and lots of configure scripts appear not to search there.

I've got the ssl stuff working now, although I still had to do that
pthread dance. It seems kinda obvious that it's getting half compiled on
way and then finishing the other way, but I don't know how or why it's
happening.

Either way I've got a functional system right now, so...

Thanks for the prompt help. It might not be a bad idea to make that
section of the docs a bit more clear. I read them, but I made exactly the
mistake that Larry mentioned.
