That's the correct way to handle it (IMNSHO), although personally I would make
that part of the 'make install' target. The added advantage with using a script
is that you could make r/o copies on Win32 for the same effect, and just have
the Makefile correctly choose the appropriate $SYMLINK symbol depending on the
platform.
