Heavy-handed, yes, but ClearCase does support symlinks and many other
features that Subversion does not (including a hefty price tag, mind
you). On the server side, Subversion uses its own repository filesystem
stored in a Berkeley Database, so why not on the client side as well?

Despite ClearCase's complexity and high hardware requirements, it is an
excellent CM product. Of the CM tools that I've encountered (BitKeeper
(briefly), ClearCase, PRCS, PVCS, RCS, SCCS, Source Integrity, and
Subversion), when implemented correctly, the ClearCase model is one of
the best.
