Apache - Could not open the requested SVN filesystem

Hi there,
Sorry about this potentially silly newbie question but after 8 hours Im
totally stumped.

Ive installed Subversion for the first time on FC1 using the rpms available
at

http://the.earth.li/pub/subversion/summersoft.fay.ar.us/pub/subversion/lates
t/fedora/bin

At first I did not install httpd because I already had it installed but then
I went back and installed it to try to fix this problem but it did not help.

Everything seems to be working fine if I access from the filesystem to
file://.... but when I try to access through http://server/rep, I always get
the following response

-
<D:error>
 <C:error/>
 <m:human-readable errcode="160029">Could not open the requested SVN
filesystem</m:human-readable>
</D:error>

Although, before, with my original apache, the error code used to be 160000
but now it is 160029.

After reading, all hints seem to suggest a permissions problem, but Ive made
sure that apache has ownership of the repository and all files under it. Ive
also tried all possible chmod values I could think of, including 0777 but
nothing seems to make any difference.

This must be a simple thing but I just cant work it out.

Tom
