I replaced the binaries with symbolic links to the binaries in /sw/bin.
This seems to work.

However, i now get an error trying to access a test repository at
<http://the.host.name/svn/demoSVN>:

svn: 'http://the.host.name/svn' is not a working copy

Is SvnX supposed to work with http urls? Why is the URL in the error
message truncated (missing "/demoSVN")?

Thanks for your help,
Chris.
