"svn: error: cannot set LC_CTYPE locale" / "svn: error: environment variable LC_CTYPE is en_US" - How to fix this?

  Hoi List,

  i've just compiled subversion-1.0.0 with no errors
  on suse 8.2.
  running
  $ subversion-1.0.0/subversion/clients/cmdline/svn
  produces the following output:

  svn: error: cannot set LC_CTYPE locale
  svn: error: environment variable LC_CTYPE is en_US

  I know it's not a bug but my os' problem. i just
  haven't found info on how to fix it.

  Any hint?
