409 error message

I am new at version control. I had my web host install subversion 1.0
and I imported a directory tree. In dav, I can see the files. I now
want to create a work area. I think I should export. I am using svn
command line client. I export and get consistently in the same place
rather early a 409 error message with a REPORT literal just after a RA
literal message. The REPORT message is a conflict involving
repos\trunk. Please advise.
