Hi, my name is Ben, and I'm a Subversion developer.

("Hi, Ben!")

This is my required sappy story.

My mind goes back to early June 2000, when Karl Fogel, Jim Blandy and I
had just returned from San Francisco. We had give a public presentation
of Subversion's design, and some guy in the audience (named Greg Stein)
had kept defending us from stupid questions. :-)

We got back into the Chicago office, and I remember Karl saying, "Well,
I guess it's time to start coding." After a couple of minutes of
discussion, I remember standing behind him while he created certain
directories in CVS: subversion/, subversion/libsvn_wc,
subversion/libsvn_fs, and so on.

I thought to myself, "Oooh, what a neat moment this is. It's like a
bookend. Someday I'll look back on this moment as the beginning of a
very long journey."

And the journey was, *ahem*, much longer than the six months we expected
it to take. But what an amazing community was built during that time.
I think Karl's just about the best open-source project leader I've ever
seen, period.

I also think we should throw some praise toward Jim Blandy. Even though
he's not an active svn developer anymore, he's really the "great
grandfather" of this project. Before there was any code or slides,
Subversion was just a twinkle in his eye. He not only named the
project, but conceived the design of the repository. The project will
always be his baby in some sense. Thanks, Jim.

(Oh, and amid the happiness of 1.0, everyone remember to say happy
birthday to Karl and Sander Striker, too!)
