I think that there actually was a process that had the DB open, and that
it finally died. I doubt that strace made any difference. At least I
can't see how it could matter. I'm happy that it finally worked.

How nice it would be if recover could first say "Taking exclusice lock
on DB" and then "Starting recovery". It would make this kind of problem
so much easier to detect.
