Well, I'll be damned. Until now, I used Activestate Python 2.2.2 for all
conversion attempts. I just uninstalled that and got me the most recent
version (2.3.2), and everything now works cleanly.

Thanks to everybody who helped out, I would have had a hard time getting
up and running without you guys.
