One Addendum I forgot to mention...

I replaced the kernel with a vanilla 2.4.24 kernel (do not forget mkinitrd
if you do it also)
The one supplied by suse appears to be not very good (to be polite).

I installed it last week, no problems at all here. It is even in production
use.
I compiled Berkeley DB4.2.52 (including the patches from sleepycat.com),
apache 2.0.48
and subersion 0.37. I runs out of the box even with hyperthreading enabled.
