Oh bah, thanks for asking that! Indeed, it's not so compiled. I was
going to go back later and add that and then forgot.
(The error message was less helpful than it could be of course. "Not
built with support for SSL" would have led me directly to the problem
-- though the error was printed by svn and I'd guess that neon does not
give back that level of detail.)

Anyway, off to re-build with openssl. Thanks again.
