I can't speak to any of the other problems you bring up, but I would
like to point out that Fedora Core 1 (Redhat since Redhat moved to a
community project) and Debian both seem to have subversion in their
distributions. (I think redhat9 had subversion as well, but you had to
use svnserve because apache was too old.) This makes setting up a
server rather trivial. Would a "HOWTO setup a subversion server on
Fedora Core 1" type thing be helpful?
