Is it fine to simply delete the complete directory
including all its .svn subdirectories before an update?
Or can this cause problems for the svn client?

Simply deleting the directory is much more convinient
than selectively deleting unversioned files.
And this is also the natural reaction of typical users.

All in all, this workaround is fine.
As already mentioned, this all is no major problem.

Cheers,
Folker
