closing stdout results in long wait

Hello!

In a working directory of the subversion source the command

    $ svn log | head

closes stdout of svn very quickly. But svn needs one minute(!) to return to the shell.
What prevents svn from quitting faster?

Note: This may relate to issue 779 but is NOT identical.
