Automatic mime-type detection

Is there a way to have automatic mime-type detection when adding
a file (not based on the file name, but on the file contents)?
If there is a way to automatically call an external program when
doing an "svn add", "file -i" can be called (under Unix), which
returns the guessed mime-type (it is sometimes wrong, but the
user could change it in this case, before the commit).
