One little update: I have bumped into it again. Just did a checkout of
the trunk and then checkout on a branch, when suddenly everything slowed
down and then finally stopped with this error:

Continuing with svn co on the same URL:

svn: REPORT of '/repos/!svn/vcc/default': timed out waiting for server
(http://svn.blah.com)

apache2ctl stop
svnadmin recover
apache2ctl start

and the checkout continues like a charm....

string not specified yet: Berkeley DB error while closing environment
Invalid argument
