I would say that your work habit is wrong. =)

I have been in the same kind situation (did php-stuff), and we had own
work-directory for everybody, and a make command that distributed
experimental stuff to the www-server (to experimentall directory). This
way you could test your stuff, commit it, and the final version is
exported/checkouted for server to the production place under the server.
This worked fine for us.
