use of tortoisesvn for non versioned files

We have been using in our company for a long time in our company for -basically- binary files. Our main repository consists of autocad and solidworks files, this way we keep track of revisions of our designs and parts.
We also use SVN Notifier as a tool for getting notified of changes in the repository.
As we got used to using it SVN as a collaboration tool we created other repositories, for example Technical Data of the products we use.
Both repositories have grown quite big by now, the main one about 150 Gbytes and the Technical Data about 22 Gbytes and we are starting to consider different alternatives to reduce disk usage.
Since our staff is familiar with both Tortoise and Notifier, I was wondering if it possible to implement a similar setup for our Technical Data as the first step, but without the history. I have noticed that the .svn folder of that repository in my laptop disk is about half the size of the directory.
So my question is basically an oxymoron: can we have svn without history ? Ideally using TortoiseSvn and SVN Notifier for commits and updates.
Other suggestions would be aprecciated.
Thanks.
