update to revision-choose items

I am using Update to Revision, and then Choose items to select a subset of a repository. However, once I have done this, and then I attempt to update again, a few additional subdirectories are getting selected, seemingly at random.
Is this a bug? If operator error, perhaps someone would be kind enough to explain what I need to do differently? I recently switched to using a new and different combination of client and server versions (TortoiseSVN 1.8.11, Build 26392 - 64 Bit , 2015/03/19 18:50:20; server 1.6.11 (r934486)).
