Update hangs indefinitely after upgrade to 1.8

Hi.
A few months ago, we upgraded our Linux subversion server to 1.8.10.
The older version of TortoiseSVN continued to work with it.

Today, we upgraded our TortoiseSVN clients to the new 1.8.10 release.

Our local repositories had to be Upgraded before they were recognized in
Explorer. The upgrade completed without any warning or error messages.

Now, when we do an SVN Update on a repository, the TortoiseSVN Update
window appears and just sits there and hangs - the update never completes.

     - the OK button is greyed out as if it is still working.
     - the "Transferring" status message is constantly refreshing with
new kBytes/s as if endless data is being transferred

I've left it like this for several hours but it never completes or
errors out.

The subversion server 1.8.10 is hosted under Apache2. It uses SSL
connections and client certificates. I wondered if client certificates
was a problem and disabled them but it made no difference.

When I try to issue an "svn checkout" or "svn update" from the server
console, the same thing happens. SVN hangs indefinitely, never
completing or timing out.

Can anyone help me diagnose this problem? I'm not sure how to begin.

Thanks,
Chris.
